When people think of branding, the words ‘logo’ and ‘design’ often spring to mind, however, this is a major misconception. Undoubtedly, a company’s logo and design plays a vital part in the branding of a business, but the potential of branding is far from limited to these two words.

 
Branding allows a company to stand out from the crowd, which is an obvious advantage for a start up business. In 2015, over 600,000 start up businesses were registered as new companies, and as the number gets higher and higher, the competition to stand out grows. However, with the assistance from a professional designer, branding can allow your business to catch the eye of your target audience, make a modern image related to you and, distinguish you as a company which not only cares about its appearance but about its customers too.

 
Using the right colour scheme, typeface, stationary and detailing plays an important role in branding. When branding is coordinated and clear, it gives the message that your business is organised and reliable. You want your brand to be recognisable, and so keeping things simplistic is key. The importance of coordination in your brand is essential when it comes to giving out a memorable impression of your business, so ensure that you keep to a certain theme without being narrow minded – it’s just as crucial to be consistent as it is to be current.

Social media is powering people in ways many have never imagined. Its now a critical tool for many businesses, not just for creating sales and attracting new customers, but also spreading brand awareness. Because of this it is vital that your branding is consistent and flows right through all your Social media platforms. Here are some top tips to help with branding in Social Media.

1) Ensure you have a consistent colour palette.

This goes without saying, if you look at the colours of any well known brand, you’ll see that they use the same colour scheme throughout everything they do. In their logo, in their text, their images, their Social media banners. When it comes to branding using the same colour scheme over and over again will help consumers become familiar with your brand identity.

Depending on how you want to be seen as a business, the colours you choose should reflect what your brand stands for. If you have a youthful brand, you might like to use bright colours. On the other hand, pastel colours work great for brands who want to be seen as welcoming and gentle.

 

2) Typography to match your brand identity’s personality.

Just like with choosing the correct colour, your choice of font should reflect what you and your brand stand for.

A minimum of two fonts and a maximum of four is usually best when creating a brand and using them consistently throughout all of your Social media images and material is crucial. Don’t mix and match depending on what you like that day. Once you have your font’s stick with them.  Notice the banner below that was created for Utter Creatives Facebook page? Here two fonts are used – Bebas and Raleway. These font are the only fonts EVER used in all marketing materials.

3) Select the right imagery and filters.

Ensure you pick imagery that has a consistent theme. A great website for free images is pixabay.com it has great stock photography – and is a great option if you’re on a budget. If you’re taking your own photos, make sure you keep your theme consistent, too.

Something else to consider is your brand filters. If you decide to use filters over any images ensure to stick with the same ones/same styles.

4) Template design for Social Media.

Do you have a template for your social media posts? If not then you should consider designing one. Coming up with a style guide will help make sure all elements of your brand on Social media work in harmony. For example, you might want to add weekly tips or quotes, that you can share with your community.
